I have cottages and it says that the city needs to work to convert them to hamlets. How do I get the cities to work?

Hi welcome to 1BC!

You need to have one of the cities existing population work on that particular tile. Go into the city screen and click on one of the other tiles that's already being worked to remove the worker and then click on the tile with the cottage ...then watch the gold roll in!

Also, once you're in the city screen (by double clicking on the city) you can tell the governor on the right to emphasize certain things like production, science, commerce. If you emphasize commerce, it should automatically choose the cottages and work them. Otherwise, you can do it manually if you so choose.

Welcome, and what I've gathered from reading the threads here is don't automate the workers if you really wanna do well. Micro-manage and win...which is why I do so bad.
