I just bought The Gold Edition. Right after installing I played through an entire eight hour warlords game without any problems. The next day I tried to play, and after clicking on Warlords the game begins to load before telling me there is a fatal error: failed initializing python. Interestingly enough I can still start and play Civ IV vanilla.

After looking through the forums it seems that Python is some kind of program I may need to download, but that doesn't explain why the game worked the first time and vanilla still works.

I'm flirting with reinstalling the game but decided to check for advice first. Any help will be appreciated.

Python is a scripting language... early game crash fixes were attempted by end users by installing it, but I think that was fixed by patches that would have been included in your version. I doubt it would help you to install it. Does your game crash to desktop trying to startup, or is that an ingame issue trying to load a save, and fails that?

I searched around a bit, including over at Civfanatics.  Looks like a couple things might fix it.

Reinstall everything, including basic Civ IV and Warlords.  Not fun, but it could work.

If you happen to have a Mac instead of a PC, this could help:

Otherwise, maybe this link:

Sorry we couldn't help better.

Please let us know if that fixes things.  Welcome to 1BC!

Thanks for the quick responses.

The error occurs while the game is trying to start up. Only when I try to start the Warlords expansion. Vanilla Civ seems to have no problem initializing python and I've actually started a game of it.

I guess I'll just try to reinstall it later this week after I finish my current game in Vanilla. I'll let you know how that goes in a couple of days.

This is odd. When I tried to uninstall Civ using add/remove programs it brought up the installation screen and tried to have me reinstall the game. I attempted the reinstall but after a few bars it asked for the first disk then said a file was missing or something.

Vanilla Civ IV still runs though.

Maybe try manually deleting the files and then running the uninstall in add/remove programs.  Once that is done, then try to re-install the whole thing.

Might want to be careful with manual uninstalling this one... it's not always easy to re-install... I can't recall what Scipio got into, but I know he has had issues.

True...

It should be fine though.  Just make sure you run the add/remove programs uninstall afterwards before trying to reinstall.

Get a good Registry cleaner, such as 'CCleaner', which can be downloaded free at www.filehippo.com

Even after you use the ADD/REMOVE, there are files left in the registry that upon reinstalling, the game "see's".  This terminates the reinstall attempt, or causes duplicate controls that can create error messages.  I've been using CCleaner for four years now and I can't say enough good about it.

The manual uninstall-reinstall worked and the game's now running fine. Thanks for the help.
