So im new to the game and i've been running into some problems. So id like a couple general tips

1. What is the best government to get into after despotism? (i know there is a huge debate over this...)

2. How many cities should i build? (roughly) and how far apart do i space them?

3. How do i get gold? (mines, tax collectors, trade?) How do tax collectors work?

4. What should i research in the middle ages (i feel comfortable w/ research early, but not later?)

5. On a related note, how should i go about deciding what to research? What paths can/should i take

6. Any other tips that will help a new player...

Anyway, thanks for the help guys. I reaaally need it.

I'm probably not the best to answer these as a casual Civ player... However, I will try. Mostly Civ is either played as a pleasant distraction where not every tile / move is looked at , or a study in statistical analysis, where every single number is looked at... which way are you looking to learn to play?

1... hard to answer straight up... they all have advantages and disadvantages. Have to learn them and look at them for your situation.

2... In previous Civs... it was as many as possible, spread to maximize usable terrain... which lead to the Fat-X "exploited" terraformed into grassland maps of Civ2... Now there is a couple problems with that style of play in Civ3. The largest is corruption... Depending on Government, too many cities can hurt. On lower difficulty levels, it shouldn't be a huge problem to space them where they waste a bit of land early, but in the higher levels overlapping them seems to work out better.

3... it's been so long since I really played I can't give alot of advice... roads on any tile that is being worked by a citizen was important...

4... this depends on your play style... what type of game victory are you trying to achieve? I usually b-lined for education if I didn't have the Great Library, and then off for Gunpowder... But some of the other tech-tree branches were often needed.

So im new to the game and i've been running into some problems. So id like a couple general tips

1. What is the best government to get into after despotism? (i know there is a huge debate over this...)

REPUBLIC.  - good for growth and good for war.  If your playing a civ where you can jump in and out of government in 1 turn then try to get to DEMOCRACY and change as you need to.

Me I have found the FRENCH to be the best Civ to play. Wonderful combination of business and work speed and a fairly late UU.  (UU = Unique Unit)

2. How many cities should i build? (roughly) and how far apart do i space them?

The end game is how big your final score is.  Civ III scores heavily weighted in favour of HAPPY People and the LAND area you control.  Hence you want to dominate the world.  Check your F8 score and your F11 details. How big is your land area vs other civs etc.

3. How do i get gold? (mines, tax collectors, trade?) How do tax collectors work?

Your converting working tiles to happy people. Click on the happy person in the city box and that changes to tax or scientist.

4. What should i research in the middle ages (i feel comfortable w/ research early, but not later?)

The best way I have found is TRADE, TRADE, TRADE your techs till the last section and then keep them to yourself.

The best way to get ahead or to trade for techs you dont have is to pick a line and research along a line. ie research along the line to MILITARY TRADITION.  As you get gunpowder and others you trade that for the techs you dont have in the other lines.

Re what to research. I like to dominate my world. I therefore need military type techs. Gunpowder, Mil Trad etc.  If you want to be a more diplomatic type power, researching non military is the way to go.

5. On a related note, how should i go about deciding what to research? What paths can/should i take

See above

6. Any other tips that will help a new player...

I play a mobile defence.  In other words I dont bother building spearmen plus I always build BARRACKS to get Vet units. I always build ARCHERS and then Swordsmen and then Horsemen.  I build roads between my cities and then as close to the civ I want to take over.

Build roads.  Get COAL via STEAM POWER before getting Nationalism and other techs. Build Railroads to all cities.  Then your mobile defence is complete.  You can rush all your units which are attacking units to attack/defend a city under attack.

Later on, if your behind in techs..try researching FLIGHT before getting MOTORISED TRANSPORT.  Other civs will trade for Flight and if you dont have and the opposition civ does, they can destroy your railroad, roads to your border cities thus destroying the ability to rush units from one area of your civ to another.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys. I reaaally need it.
