What's your favorite setup? What civ do you pick, what government?

I always pick Carthage for two reasons:
They are seafaring and industrious; faster boats and workers.
Numedian Mercenary: most powerful unit up until Fuedalism (I think).

I always stay with Despotism the enitre game:
To lazy to switch gov'ts, and although corruption is high, you can effectivly battle it with couthouse and police stations. Not to much to pay for units, as with Republic and Fuedalism you have to pay 2 and even 3 gold per turn for units.

What do you think?

Playing Vanilla Civ

The French - found them to be the best even though you dont get a free tech every new age.

Good speed of workers which is very important in the early years.

Good trade capacity

UU doesnt come till middle and I only build a few and keep them out of harms way till I really want my Golden Age.

Government: Republic. Go from Despotism to Republic and stay there.  French takes 5-6 turns to change govt.  Just cannot justify that length of time.

I was always partial to the Celts. Spiritual leader, rush to Iron working and build a good offensive unit without iron . . . conquer everybody in sight. . . .

For some strange reason, I'm partial to the Japanese.  Can't recall why offhand.  Perhaps their earlier UU.

Also.. I prefer Commie-ism.  I ALWAYS have a problem with corruption no matter how many courthouses I build. Spreads the corruption evenly.  Also has a lower War Weariness factor.

I've played the Babylonians most. They have very affordable cultural buildings and pretty exotic city names as well.

After that, it's the Germans mainly because blue is my favourite colour, and also a bit because the Panzer has kind of an edge compared to the tank (I get usually get involved in unprovoked wars well before the Modern Armor is available).

Oh and before I forget, the government type:

During the development stage I try to have Republic and then Democracy as soon as possible. And during peacetime in the modern era.

Later on during the game war is often so inevitable and prolonged that as soon as the government falls, I temporarily switch to communism.
