They don't. If you want to max your playing potential, never automate until very late in the game when you are pretty much already won. Even then, you can eek out better efficiency by micro-managing.

Geeze, all this talk of Civ is actually making me think of playing the game again . . .

Contrary to what EVERYONE says, I automate about 1/2 my workforce with small crews of road builders that I control. That way they're doing some good while being around when I need to 'reactivate' them.

Usually, the main reason I automate is to achieve an actual goal though.. like clearing wetlands or I'll set a small group to improve a city.

Once I've built my roads, they're all automated until I'm about to get Steam.

As to whether they develop the land correctly.. Ehhhhhhh... kinda. They default to 'mine' mainly or they'll build a road. And they don't work together unless confined. You have to tweak it yourself and tell them yourself 'No Changes'.

And welcome to the boards WingFan!

Thanks for the welcome   I put all on automate, cept a few road crews. These crews are gonna start building my railroads when available, i have so many workers right now that micromanaging will take up so much of my time.

Any other suggestions on any other part of this game would be great!!!

No problem on the Welcome! We're a happy bunch here mostly. We also have a hot chick running about that plays Civ

Feel free to roam about and see what we talk about. Here it goes way beyond Civ.

Well... Let's start out by finding out what are your settings and who are you playing and playing against?  Where ya at in the game?

Well, im at date 1660AD, Chieften (hehe), i am only playin against the Iroquoi and the French on a huge Archepelago map. The French I found quickly cuz they are on the same land mass. The Iroquoi are on a smaller land mass not near me. My government is Democracy. Getting close to Steam advance.

Right now I am expanding a great deal onto a large land mass, trying to take as much land as possible before my opponents grew any larger.

I am not a micro manager so automating my workers is something I tend to do a lot. However, they aren't very efficient. At least, they can't read my mind! haha I will usually automate them all unless I have a specific need at the time, or just pull them off their "mine" building to do something else.

I can't believe people still play Civ3 this regularly.  Maybe it's more timeless than Civ4.  Sadly, I got rid of mine when Civ4 came out.

I personally never automate.

When I dont need all the workers just group them in large stacks and FORTIFY them (go to sleep)
