So I automated all but 2 workers and noticed that they only build mines? I finally was able to build railroads and seen that the automated workers were building R/R's all within the cityies limits not connecting to other cities!!! I remembered from previous play, that my source of coal would run out quickly lol I 'un-automated' all my workers and micro managing now.

Right now im completing my R/R 'web' and moving all my workers to less developed cities.

I will be preparing to go to war soon with the French. They are very weak and only have about 10 cities. When the French are gone, i will have total control of my land mass.

The Iroquoi are on a smaller land mass and dont seem to be expanding to fast.

Any suggestions on war strategies?

Which is the downside of micromanaging

Set them a specific task automated.. Like.. 'Irrigate to there' or 'Build a road to there' or 'Mine this whole area'

Good stuff building your RR web.  Vital for both attack & Defence.

For war. The French may get stronger if you attack and their UU scores a kill. Gives them a Golden 20 turns. They may not be as weak as you think.

Spend time building your attacking forces up. Check that you have enough Settlers so you can use them to expand and take over dead areas or enemy areas quicker - easier movement.

I use plenty of artillery or cannon.  Pound the defenders down before attacking.

Dont destroy the enemy city..the other civs dont like that.

I use older obsolete units like swordsmen to occupy a city and keep the quality units just around the city in case it flips.
