I plan to do a photo-logue blog at some point but I will also share some photos here. This appetizer is of my rail-pass itinerary after all the train travel was done.

Yesssir, and crossed the giant bridge as well.

I also took the train that crossed over from Denmark to Germany (from Kobenhaven to Hamburg) on the ferry.

That is the The Rødby-Puttgarden Ferry and so the train boarded on the bottom deck and we were ordered to leave the train during the 45 minute trip across.

We had access to the top deck, and from there one could see a wind-farm.

Apparently, Denmark is deriving some 25 percent of its energy from wind.

So I've sorted all of my pictures from Denmark and Sweden into appropriate folders.

Here is a little story. I arrived to Malmö from Kobenhaven Kastrup (Airport) via train. Malmö is not pronounced how it looks, but something more like Malmou, but that isn't quite right either...it has to do with the diacritical marks above the o.

Anyways, I chose Malmö as my first destination so that I could visit a former colleague of mine, Michael, from Vanderbilt, and his wife. They kindly agreed to host me for two nights at their apartment that they own. They are an Austrian couple, now working in the Denmark/S.Sweden area.

On my first full day there, Sunday, we took a trip to Helsingør in Denmark to visit the Kronborg Castle, which is known to be the historical setting of Hamlet. It was built in 1585.

Kronborg is actually more of a Castle/Fortress that has great historical significance dating back to the Middle Ages and was once home to the Royal Families of Denmark.

In the casemates of the Castle there are various passages underground and these areas once served as living quarters for the slaves....I mean soldiers during times of war. It was most wretched conditions to live in, with little light, and cramped quarters. There is also a statue of Holger Danske (Holger the Dane) who is a legendary hero who will allegedly rise up to save the Danes during the most desperate of times in Denmark. Maybe they could have used him during WW2. Anyways...

On the first floor of the Castle, around the entire perimeter is a Museum of the Naval History of Denmark, dating back to the Viking era through the present times. Here, I learned that the Danes actually had colonies, beyond Greenland, actually in the Caribbean, but being unable to compete with the larger powers, they were sold off to the USA in the early 1800s. On the upper floor of the castle, around the perimeter were the royal families quarters, dining hall, ballroom, guest rooms etc.

There was also a Chapel, and as we were told, the Castle was actually destroyed in a fire in 1629, rebuilt by 10 years later, but the fire destroyed everything but the Chapel, spared by the protective hand of God. Of course, it would have been great if God had spared the entire castle from such a disaster!

The Castle is currently undergoing some rennovations, to correct for oxidation of the roof.

On the way back to the train station after touring Kronborg, we strolled through the small town of Helsingør (pop. ~53,000).

There was a lovely park with a neat statue

And some fantastically cultivated trees that were unlike anything I had ever seen before

I saw similar trees in Malmö, but in Malmö the trees were not pruned, so they were actively greening. But the trees here in Helsingør are apparently tended to each year to produce the observed effect.

This was how I spent my first full day in Europe.

Ok then, where were we....
My itinerary on this vacation was to first visit the S.Sweden/Denmark area, then go by train to Croatia via Germany, Croatia for almost a week, then go by train from Croatia to Netherlands through Vienna. The final weekend was spent in Amsterdam/Utrecht area before flying home from Amsterdam Schipol airport a little over two weeks after I arrived.

Why Croatia? Let me show you.

I arrived in Zagreb, the capital city, and spent two days there with the hosts from the Couchsurfing Network. Pictures on the Zagreb experience another time.

Zagreb at Night

After Zagreb, I left my hosts and all familiarity behind and went off on my own to visit the Plitvice Lakes National Park. This, for me was the main draw to Croatia. Now you will see why.

I arrived in the early afternoon, checked into my hotel room, dropped off the luggage and hit the trails for the rest of the afternoon.

View From The Balcony

I will let the pictures do the talking from here:

The Best For Last

...there are many more of these pictures, of course, but now you see why I had chosen to visit Croatia.
