Ok, here we go. After several restarts on account of bad starting locations, such as terrible surrounding terrain or close proximity to Aztecs , I found one to my liking.

Starting Conditions (Include Tech Brokering Turned Off):

We are the Maya.

Our Starting Location:

I sacrificed the first two turns to move the settler towards the coast. We don't have any gold nearby, but if we push towards those silk plantations, there is much revenue to be found.

We have neighbours, we have encountered the Inca (Turn 20) and Greeks (Turn 23).

We've found two small tribal villages. The first, on turn 7, was hostile. This surprised me, because I've never seen a hostile village that early in the game. The second gave us a handful of gold as tribute for protection from the vile Greeks.

Our research efforts have been driven towards facilitating our Unique Unit, the Holkan, which is a rapid-response spearman that does not require copper or iron. Mission accopmlished, as we researched Hunting and Bronze Working and can now produce these fine soldiers as we please.

We are now invested in Animal Husbandry to take advantage of the wild flocks of Sheep near our capital city.

Our Capital City, Mutal has a Barracks in progress, unfinished, has completed a scout, and is now working on training a worker force.

We have a scout and warrior regiment exploring. I have marked the currently known location of a den of lions near our scout. The terrain surrounding Mutal is diverse and favourable for additional townships to develop.

I did not pursue early religion, but it has been my experience on Emperor level that Confucianism is quite attainable. Animal Husbandry will get us going on that path if we so choose to take it.

I now pass the Mayan Power Stick to the next Warrior Chief.

We have neighbours, we have encountered the Inca (Turn 20) and Greeks (Turn 23).
Sounds like we have some elbow room then. A lot of desert and plains around but I guess it's a little better than last time.

Let's put up tags for good city sites and indicate what their priority should be.

No time today to play the next 25...

Hmm... a slow start for the Mayans it seems.

Well, I'll probably have time to take this on at the weekend, but not any earlier, so if anybody else wants to jump start this thing go ahead. Otherwise I'll pick it up then.

Any takers?

2960 Explore
2920 Explore
2900 Worker built. Village gives us a scout.

2880 Our warrior defeats a wolf and becomes a skilled woodsman, crafty in the lore of the jungle.
2840 The new scout Looksee heads north, and the other scout Ware-tf-ami heads west.
2800 Explore
2760 Explore
2720 We discover how to husband animals. Not entirely sure that sounds healthy. Next we shall look into the joys of the circular.
There are horses up north, not too far away.

2680 Worker in Mutal.

2640 In an extraordinary stroke of misfortune Alexander's borders expand pushing Ware-tf-ami into the desert right next to a pride of lions who promptly eat him. I hope they choke.
2600 Explore
2560 Looksee finds many great creatures he names "Bigear Snakefaces". He has, um, a limited vocabulary.

2520 Explore
2480 Explore
2440 Barracks completed in the capital. Ah Balam, our woodman warrior discovers a delightful village, in his dreams. In real life the villagers try to cook him.
2400 Our scout fights off a panther and our warrior fights off the villagers. Both are heavily wounded. In better news, we have discovered wheels are much better when round. Up until now, blocky and triangular had been popular.

2360 Healing
2320 Looksee meets a representative of Brennus. Notice he mentions they are "warlike". gulp.

2280 Our first Holkan is trained. Next we shall build a settler.
2240 Healing. Zzzzzzz.
2200 Half-cured, Looksee insists on exploring again. Not wishing to be outdone by a mere scout, Ah Balam does the same, staunching the blood as he walks.
2160 Agriculture - at last we can farm the land and grow grass to feed to our sheep Now we need pots so that we may make collections of useless objects.
Still bleeding all over the place, Looksee runs from jungle lions.....

2120 Exploration
2080 Ah Balam narrowly avoids a barbarian archer. Is it that bad already?
2040 Exploration.
2000 Settler next turn. Where should he go?

I don't know what it is about this game, it's like wading through mud to try and get things done. The Incan Empire is huge by comparison. Luckily we have plenty of room to expand to the east, but there's damn-all resources there really. I hate to say it, but this is going to be as difficult as the last one except that (phew) there's no tech brokering.

NEXT!

It doesn't look too bad, the city site to the north looks a mighty fine place to settle and there seems to be some good land out to the west of the capital. Is that where Alexander lies? ...We can take him A 2nd city up north and a 3rd to the west should give us a good base to build on.

Anyway it sounds like we need to put a serious defence out there with reports of pesky barbarians running loose. Have we got ourselves covered?

We need to pump out a few Holkans now - that should cover us against any barbarians until we start seeing axemen. The two workers still have a move left apiece if the next king wants to use that. Alexander is far to the west. Of greater concern are the Inca who are to the northwest and closer than the Greeks - they will cause big problems in the future, and they are eating up land at a worrying rate. We don't know where Celtic lands lie; all we've seen is one lone scout.

We also have the option of adopting slavery which I haven't taken yet as there was no benefit and a potential slave revolt risk. I suggest we go for the 2nd city site I have marked (or maybe 1 square further N?) and git ourselves some hoss! (chariots will cover the axeman threat) We then need some copper (to the W) and then calendar tech would be sweet.

I would suggest settling the copper instead. There is plenty land, so building settlers & workers ought to be the priority. Financial will help pay for maintenance. Ballcourts will benifit us more than Calendar but any of that should not come before we get a religion.
