A good summary of the role of Shia clergy. Should a high-level cleric join the protests, it could easily become decisive. The key to making a difference through protests like these are not to fear death, to keep protesting even after the first dozen protesters have been shot. The more people the government shoots without dispersing the protests, the more awkward will the protests become for it, and most govts have the sense to stop in time.
We're dealing with Shias here. Martyrs are strong popular rallying points everywhere in the world, but Shiaism has taken the veneration of martyrdom to a whole level of its own. What's more, pretty much all of the most venerated historical Shia martyrs, including the arch-martyr Hussein ibn Ali, were not killed by them evil infidels but by (according to them) illegitimate Islamic religious authorities. And you know what? The Iranian liberation movement has already got its first official martyr!
It's funny in a way, but the religious sentiments that were the power base of the Iranian establishment might, indirectly, contribute to its undoing.
