Nice job!

Does epic do anything but slow the game down? Does it give you more units or what? I'll have to try once to see

It seems difficult to me to have a unit that dominates it's era on normal difficulty. Lets say you make war elephants fairly early. I should be able to storm my neighbor at least a little while before the tech tree catches up. Not so in normal speed.

Likewise, it feels more important to me to improve my land on epic or marathon.

I'm a big fan of no tech tree trading too, since I'm complaining.

THAT, imho, is simply cheating

No tech trading at all? I think I've done that once or twice.

I did no tech brokering at one point, but the issue with that is, that you cannot tell how advanced someone is, truly. They may have only three techs ahead of you THAT THEY RESEARCHED and is available...but they could have traded for fifteen others that they cannot trade to you.

I'll do an epic speed for the next unofficial GotM

I play on Odyssey speed. Starts at 5 year turns in 4000 BC, and is down to 2 year turns by about AD. Also, no tech brokering has GOT to be on. Also, tech advance from conquest needs to be on at least somewhat (you can set it to partial probability or partial acquisition, but I just play with total; in sum, if you conquer an enemies city and they have a tech you could qualify to research, there is a probability you will manage to snag some of it, maybe all of it).

I so very much prefer epic.

I have to say, I am with you on this Nuc.

I think the difference between Epic and Normal is that the amount of turns during the first have of the game are increased. There does not seem to be much difference in the end game, but the beginning just flies by, and seems like there is insufficient time to devote to either building an empire militarily, economically or both, for that matter. Either one.

And that, for me, is my favorite part of the game.

Personally, I think the epic game, however, is just a bit too long. I wonder, if there is a way to change the parameters of the game so maybe the Epic turns were somewhat reduced by a certain percent, somewhere inbetween the current level, and the normal speed.

In the meantime though, I just continue with the epic game.

I played my last game on epic. It was hard to figure out how well I was doing early game because of it but it worked out okay. Playing another one now, on an archipelago...it's going okay but not great, but it might just be all those damn islands.

I don't think I'd want to play on Marathon though (I imagine that's the Odyssey level...)

It was okay, the previous game. I did have cities down to making units in 2 turns eventually but the time stretch was a bit disconcerting.

When Civ IV 1st came out, I played most of the games on Marathon, but now I don't have the patience for it.
