That was quick. Just a couple turns after loading it up, I continued my military conquest and lost by a sneak-cultural victory I didn't see coming. Wowzers.

I believe it was a losing score of 5551. I suppose that won't win our GOTM.

I don't believe Tones said anything about playing it over more than once, but I'm not sure I'm up for that. Tones... it was your compliments of my supposed game play that did me in.

Gotta share a small bright-spot of my losing game. I did my normal sending of allgreat leaders and commanders to my capital city, plus Heroic Epic and West Point in my capital. The result? Big bad-a$$ units being cranked out (1 battleship per turn, for example).

11 military leaders:

Results in making brand new bad@$$ units like this new tank (ignore the others):

and this brand new battleship:

Some mighty fine starter units you've got there! I don't think I've reached double figures of Military Instructors in a city before. But that's probably because I usually mess around turning some into armies and -at least one- academy.

Getting robbed through the back door by a cultural victory in the middle of world conquest is a bitter pill to swallow. Huge anti-climax in my book... a condition of x turns to take their culture off them with tanks would be an improvement for me.

Or maybe that's just my Civ play style bias there!

a sneak-cultural victory I didn't see coming.

But Nuke! There is no such thing as a sneak-cultural victory. The victory screen tells you that it is coming...and then you go send your troops to occupy their cultural centers. Do you not check the victory screen?

In any case, I have started this game, played the first session up to around 800 bc

Off to a good start, having built both the Oracle and the Temple of Artymus. Have religion of Hinduism and Confucianism. These will set me up well for financial success for the rest of the game. Compared to my neighbors the vikings, for the time being my military is quite weak, so that is something I will have to work on in the short term.

I still think that you should be able to veto another Civs cultural victory, with the condition that all Civs must then choose sides and war ensues until a final victor stands.

Approaching the end of the 19th century. I am well aware of the need for vigilance against a Malinese cultural victory - they have three nice fat cultural cities.

There was simply no point in continuing the war with Japan so at the first opportunity made peace. However, I decided to punish the Koreans, even landing troops next to the capital. But then came the results of their dastardly deal with the Japanese who must have given them everything in the tech drawer - more and more modern units start to appear on the battlefield, some better than mine. As War elephants are replaced by riflemen I extract what I can from a peace agreement, gather my troops and send them west on my new rail network. A quick hop by steamship and I invade Ethiopia. Ooops. Didn't realise they were vassals of Mali - the most technically advanced nation in the world. I am now at war with them and I realise with some horror that they have settled all the islands between us and even the southern tip of my own continent! How the f+*K did I miss that???? They have flight, and machine guns (groan) but are seriously unready for a fight. I have but one weapon that will defeat them - artillery. Battle-hardened, upgraded over centuries from the original trebuchets these babies all have 20+ XP and rain death down upon machine gun nests! But it must be done quickly before Mali can build and send reinforcements. That is the task ahead.

If you read the above NC you'll see you are not the only one who can make silly mistakes

Trying to finish this today - don't think I'll make it though.

1920 :The Malinese war is over. I gained all the territory I wanted and they never sent the fleet I was worried would come over the horizon. In the meantime my friends the Persians have been keeping the Koreans busy and fought themselves to a standstill leaving Korea once again looking like a juicy target. The Japanese and the Mongolians have likewise been keeping themselves busy - and it wasn't any kind of tea ceremony either. However, the main concern is still Mali. Way ahead in tech and now less than 100 turns until they get a cultural victory. I never saw their fleet because they didn't build one - they've been Wonder building instead. I need to get some spies in there and ensure what I believe is the case - that they have no access to uranium - also to take down cultural buildings if possible.

Cripes, who knew how difficult this could be eh? Maybe Arty or LC can show us? I'm still struggling on, but...

1953 and I have about 30 turns left until the damn Malinese get a cultural victory. They are so far away and so far ahead in tech I can't see what to do except (as I am attempting) to flood their weakest cultural city with spies and disrupt everything possible. There is no time to get a domination victory though I will have a try, and a marginal chance at diplomatic. Anything else is totally out of the question. I can't understand how such a relatively small country as Mali has managed this. I have more than 1000 points more than them but I am losing. I bribed Japan to start a war with them, but it seems to have had negligable effect. Nukes are too far away. Despite its faults, this AI is no pushover. Not long to go now.

I'm glad you didn't run away with it with ease, Tones, since I had trouble with it and didn't win.

The Malinese and Japan were the 2 big technological monsters in mine as well though I caught them in the 20th century and passed them before losing. Darn tech trading.

This has been a rollercoaster ride and I'm not off it yet.
1954 and Mali is still at war with Japan but has turned on what must be 100% culture. I blow up a library, fail at a diplomatic victory, and have 29 turns left to gain some respect from this situation.
1959 Mali offers Hit Novies for Uranium!!!! Ha ha aha hah ahha haaa! But we have discovered Fission. Manhatten Project in 8 turns; Malinese victory in 25 turns.
By 1965 three other countries are at war with Mali.
1967 Completion of the Manhatten Project. Oh crap you need Satellites for ICBM's! Quick - build tacs!
1970: start of the great Malinese war with nuclear weapons launched from Japan. By 1973 I have nuked Mali into a 40 turn window and also invaded Korea. Things are finally going my way.
Or are they?
